Project overview

The Department is improving key intersections along Samford Road to reduce road traffic congestion.

This community consultation summary highlights stakeholder feedback from the consultation carried out to inform the business case for the proposed upgrades to Osborne Road and Glen Holm Street, Mitchelton.

Samford Road community consultation study area

Consultation process

Community and key stakeholder consultation was completed from 15 November to 12 December 2021. 

Feedback was requested for upgrades to:

  • Samford Road and Gel Holm Street intersection
  • Samford and Osborne Road intersection

Consultation included

  • postcard distributed to around 23,500 properties around Gaythorne, Mitchelton, Enoggera, Everton Hills, Arana Hills, Ferny Hills, Keperra, Upper Kedron and Ferny Grove
  • a webpage which included information about the project, fact sheet and online survey 

Overview of engagement 

We received 80 responses through

  • 61 online consultation
  • 14 email
  • 4 phone calls through the community feedback line
  • 1 meeting with elected representative. 

Glen Holm Street intersection

Proposed works

  • Additional unsignalised, right-turn lane (outbound) on Samford Road 
  • Minor pavement widening to enable construction of a turning lane
  • Five mature trees will need to be removed and replaced from Fenwick Park to allow for traffic improvements.

Key outcomes

  • 60% of responses were satisfied/extremely satisfied or neutral on the proposition that the proposed Glen Holm Street intersection upgrade meets community needs
  • 40% of responses were dissatisfied/extremely dissatisfied that the proposed Glen Holm Street intersection upgrade meets community needs.

Key themes included:

  • 51% of responses viewed the potential environmental and cultural heritage impacts of the project as the most important aspect of the project with the removal of trees highlighted as a concern in feedback.
  • 35% of responses said that they currently avoided the intersection due to congestion and safety issues.
  • 38% of responses prioritised efforts to reduce congestion and reduce journey times as the most important objective for the proposed upgrade.

Osborne Road intersection

Proposed works

  • Installing an additional right-turn outbound lane on Samford Road at the Osborne Road intersection.
  • Minor civil work treatments, including line marking, new signs and kerbing.
  • To implement this improvement, parking would be impacted outside some businesses, with a reduction from 8 angle spaces to 4 kerbside car parks.

Key outcomes

  • 54% of responses were satisfied/extremely satisfied or neutral on the proposition that the proposed Osborne Road intersection upgrade would meet community needs.
  • 46% of responses were dissatisfied/extremely dissatisfied that the proposed Osborne Road intersection upgrade would meet community needs.

Key themes included:

  • 60% of responses raised parking requirements and potential restrictions as an important consideration for the project and as an issue with the proposed design.
  • 42% of responses said that they currently avoided the intersection due to congestion.
  • 36% of responses identified the importance of the potential environmental and cultural heritage impacts of the project.

Next steps 

Glen Holm Street

Early works and construction are scheduled to commence in early 2023.

Osborne Road

The Osborne Road intersection is currently in the planning phase with the business case to be completed in the coming months. Further funding is required to progress to design and construction.
