Gold Coast-Springbrook Road, Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements reconstruction works
Gold Coast-Springbrook sustained a significant number of landslips, rock falls and tree falls over a 10-kilometre section during extreme rainfall and flooding events from 22 February to 20 May 2022.
The extensive damage included 15 major sites, more than 150 minor sites, with 3 more landslips occurring on 22 and 23 September 2022.
The department is repairing the 10km section of Gold Coast-Springbrook Road that sustained significant damage. This section of road was closed for safety between Neranwood Park and Pine Creek Road from March 2022. Reconstruction efforts have been underway since that time.
As progress continues, the road will reopen to motorists on 21 December 2023.
Restoration works are continuing in 2024 with stop/slow conditions. Work will also be undertaken at night with some overnight road closures required.

Reconstruction efforts included removing large rocks and fallen debris, installing slope stabilisation above the road (rock anchoring with soil nails and shotcrete), installing rock catch mesh above the road and pavement works.Funding

Current status
Reconstruction commenced in late March 2022. The road will reopen to motorists on 21 December 2023, with works continuing in 2024.

Restoration works will continue in 2024 on the reopened section of Gold Coast-Springbrook Road, with stop/slow traffic conditions and sections with a reduced speed limit of 40km/h in place for the safety of road users and work crews. Some overnight road closure will also be required.
Damage on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road
Gold Coast-Springbrook Road experienced significant damage and remained closed until works were completed to make the area safe.
Significant damage to Gold Coast-Springbrook Road was caused by landslips, rock falls and tree falls.
Major damage sites
There were 15 major sites with landslips that required immediate attention following damage from multiple extreme rainfall and flooding events from 22 February to 20 May 2022.
Typical major site repairs involved scaling to remove loose rocks and debris, and the installionof various permanent geotechnical controls (such as soil nails, shotcrete and steel wire meshing) to stabilise the site.
On Gold Coast–Springbrook Road at the single-lane section, the major slip extended 30m below and 70m above the road.
Minor damage sites
More than 150 minor sites have been identified, consisting of landslips and damage to pavement, drainage, road signs and guardrails. Repairing a minor damage site generally takes less time compared to major damage sites.
