Brisbane Valley Highway (Ipswich - Harlin), Warrego Highway to Fernvale, improve safety

Improvements to approximately 14km of the Brisbane Valley Highway will reduce the rate and severity of crashes and improve traffic efficiency.

The Brisbane Valley Highway provides a busy route for motorists travelling to Brisbane and Ipswich. Traffic incidents currently result in significant delays or road closures. The proposed road treatments will help to address these issues and provide a safer road network.

  • Wide centre line treatment to provide additional separation between northbound and southbound traffic.
  • Guardrail to provide better protection from roadside hazards.
  • Vegetation clearing from the lane edge between the Warrego Highway and Fernvale to remove roadside hazards.
  • Installing dedicated right-turn and left-turn lanes at Ironbark Road intersection and reducing the length of overtaking lanes approaching the intersection.
  • Installing a dedicated right-turn and left-turn at the Borallon Station Road intersection.
  • Minor bus stop improvements at James Street.
  • Police enforcement bay south of Glamorgan Vale Road.
  • Installing a dedicated left-turn at the Glamorgan Vale Road.

Current status

Works are now complete for the first 5.5km section of the Brisbane Valley Highway between Bayley Road and Sandy Creek (southern branch). Final sealing works will be completed in the warmer months (late 2023) to ensure a high-quality outcome and to protect the integrity of the sealing works.

This was the first package of works to be delivered as part of the safety improvements for the Brisbane Valley Highway between Warrego Highway and Fernvale.

Construction of the safety improvements is being delivered in 2 packages. The second package of works to be delivered at priority locations between Sandy Creek (South) and Fernvale is now underway. The project is expected to be completed late 2024, weather and construction conditions permitting.
