Ormeau rail facility

A rail facility is being constructed on a 66ha site in the Gold Coast region.

The new rail facility will cater for the expanding passenger train fleet. The 65 Queensland Train Manufacturing Program trains will be maintained and stabled at the Ormeau rail facility.

Current status

Construction works will continue in 2024. Construction is expected to be completed in line with the delivery of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program trains.

The temporary construction access road linking the rail facility site to Prairie Road is now open – heavy vehicles are using this access to enter and exit the site.

Feedback on the concept design for the rail facility has now closed.

We are committed to working with the community, including residents and businesses during the construction and operation of the rail facility.

Ormeau rail facility site layout map

A map of Ormeau, located 44km south of Brisbane, Queensland. The map displays the Ormeau rail facility site and layout which is 66ha. The site's western border extends down the existing rail line from Prairie Road in the north and Goldmine Road to the south. The Gold Coast Line for train operations runs along the western border of the site. Further east along Goldmine Road is the Ormeau Woods State School. To the south-west border of the site is the Lewani Palms Resort, which is accessed from Lahrs Road/Goldmine Road.

The permanent rail facility access is off Goldmine Road, with internal roads connecting the access point to the facilities. The layout plan calls out to the maintenance facility main building, including the administration office, 2 car parking areas, a train wash facility, staff facilities and a stabling yard. The rail facility site connects to the Gold Coast Main Line with future rail line tracks at the northern and southern ends of the site.

Site access during construction

The Prairie Road temporary construction access road is now open – heavy vehicles are using this to enter and exit the site.

You may notice an increase in heavy vehicle traffic on Prairie Road and the presence of traffic control. Water carts and a small number of heavy and light vehicles will still be required to access site via Goldmine Road. Traffic control will only be used on Goldmine Road when required. 

Site access during operation

When operational, the facility will have up to 140 staff working daily across varying shift times.

The permanent access to the Ormeau rail facility will be via Goldmine Road. The rail facility will connect to Goldmine Road via a new private access road – this will be the permanent and only access to the rail facility site once the facility is operational. The design of the access is underway and will include measures to minimise the impact on Goldmine Road traffic. There will not be an access off Prairie Road during operations.

The majority of vehicles accessing the site during operations will be light vehicles. Heavy vehicles will access the site for deliveries on an as required basis.

Community engagement

Feedback on the Ormeau rail facility concept designs was undertaken between 4 December 2023 and 2 March 2024.

This feedback is now being reviewed and considered as part of the design development process.

Information about key feedback themes will be provided in mid-2024, with information about the final design to be provided by late 2024.

Works scheduled

Construction works are underway with work taking place from Monday to Saturday, between 6:30am and 6:30pm each shift. Security presence will be on the rail facility site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

During June, some work outside of standard hours will be required where oversized equipment is delivered and removed from site via Prairie Road. Advanced notice will be provided to the community prior to deliveries taking place.

Ormeau rail facility construction site works

From June, we will:

  • continue bulk earthworks and ground improvement works including the removal of unusable materials
  • deliver quarry materials and concrete to create a level and stable work area
  • continue construction of internal roads, culverts and bridges including piling
  • clear vegetation, where required
  • deliver and remove over-sized equipment to site outside of standard work hours via Prairie Road
  • connect essential services, including electricity and NBN
  • undertake partial removal of site facilities near Goldmine Road. Some facilities will be kept as a satellite office with internal access.

These works are weather permitting.

During the works, you may experience construction noise, low levels of vibration and dust.

Works will involve the use of slashers, excavators, rollers, piling rigs, trucks, elevated work platforms and cranes. We will minimise impacts where possible, including operating equipment within set noise and vibration limits.

All works comply with environmental requirements, including working in waterways.

For the safety of all road users, traffic control may be in place on Prairie Road and Goldmine Road, where required.

The works area will extend slightly up the south-eastern boundary of the site along the existing rail line, where a site access road and carparking area will be established. A small construction site office and car parking facility will be in place at the southern edge of the rail facility site along Goldmine Road, within the works area. A site access road for light vehicle access is shown off Goldmine Road near the railway overpass. As part of site establishment and preparation for construction, bulk earthworks and ground improvement works are being undertaken across the site. This includes stock piling material for use on site, removing unusable material and piling as part of ground stabilisation works. A new temporary access road will be constructed to the north to connect the site with Prairie Road. Heavy vehicles will use this road to access site during construction. Site offices and a carpark will be established near to the new temporary access road. The water main connection works will be undertaken on Goldmine Road, between the railway overpass to Rockwood Drive and will extend into Jonquil Street in April 2024.
